Venue: Chern Lecture Hall

Class Timings: Fridays from 1:45 PM - 3:15 PM

First Meeting: 22 Aug 2025

Course Outline: These sessions are compulsory for all first-year mathematics and physics students (PhD as well as IPhD). Each session will consist of a lecture given by one faculty member about the work done in their group(s). Students are supposed to interact and actively engage in discussions during the lectures with the speakers, and their colleagues. Each student will be required to submit a short summary of what was discussed in these lectures, along with three interesting new "things" that they have learned in the class. As part of their essays, students are  also encouraged to identify an interesting open problem that they found interesting in the research area summarized during that class.

Course Evaluation: Each student will be required to submit a 2-4 page originally worded summary of the research topics discussed in these classes. For the final grade, the best N/2 assignment submitted will be used for each student, where N is the number of total lectures in the course.

Course Outcome:
1. Have a basic grasp of many active research areas in ICTS and sister institutes like NCBS and CAM with which we have joint programs.
2. Understand the important questions in these research areas, and make informed choices for their individual future work.
3. Appreciate the plurality of scientific research in general, and begin to visualize its synergy.
4. Learn practical ways of learning new things from seminars in different topics.
