Course Description: This course is designed to familiarize students with research methodologies for the modern mathematician. Specific topics to be discussed include best practices for formulating mathematical questions and writing/presenting mathematics at the research level. Additionally, the importance and role of ethics will be emphasized as it pertains to academic research. Topics of discussion include the definition of plagiarism, conflicts of interest, mathematics in society and industry.

Course Outcome: After completing the course, the student will 

1) appreciate and understand how to conduct research responsibly and ethically. 

2) gain experience in writing mathematics at the professional level. 

3) gain experience in presenting mathematical content to an audience of peers. 

4) be able to recognize ethical concerns in the research context and learn appropriate ways to respond to them.
