Course description: 

Quick recap of Newtonian dynamics, Lagrangian formulation, Noether's theorem, Central force problems, Hamiltonian formulation, Poisson brackets and symplectic structure, 3-body problem,  Rigid body motion, Small oscillations, Hamilton Jacobi theory, Integrability, Chaos and Nonlinear-dynamics.

Evaluation:

Final exam: 40%
Assignments: 20%
Bimonthly written tests during tutorials: 40%

   1) Goldstein: Classical Mechanics
   2) Jose and Saletan: Classical Dynamics: A Contemporary Approach
   3)Reichl: The Transition to Chaos

 Course Outcome:

  • Have a clear understanding of the basic principles of Newtonian mechanics and applications to two body, rigid body
    and small oscillation problems. 
  • Understanding of the  Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations
  • Get an exposure to a few advanced topics (this is about 20% of the syllabus and includes topics such as Chaos, Integrability etc.)
  • Develop analytical and numerical problem-solving skills.
