Course Description:
This first introduction to algebraic geometry is structured around Garrity et al.'s Algebraic Geometry: A Problem Solving Approach, working through the topics in the syllabus via guided exercises and examples rather than lectures and theory-first exposition.

Syllabus:
Conics, elliptic curves, and higher degree curves, culminating in the Riemann-Roch theorem and its applications; affine and projective varieties; and an introduction to sheaves and cohomology.

Resources:
Textbook:
Garrity, T. A., Belshoff, R., Boos, L., Brown, R., Lienert, M., Murphy, D., & Parsons, J. O. Algebraic Geometry: A Problem-Solving Approach. Student Mathematical Library, Vol. 66. American Mathematical Society, 2013.

Course Outcomes:
1. Work fluently with algebraic curves.
2. Understand affine and projective varieties.
3. Become familiar with sheaves and cohomology.

Course Evaluation: Based on classroom presentations and participation.
